Welcome to the Oakland Composite Squadron in Pontiac/Waterford, Michigan. I am Major Mary C. Thornton, Commander of the Oakland Composite Squadron. I joined Civil Air Patrol in 2007 shortly after my daughter became a CAP cadet and after having a chance to see the wonderful work CAP does with the young people. CAP teaches life skills to the cadets like leadership, time management, honor and respect for others, themselves and the nation. Throughout my years of membership I have served in many capacities allowing me the opportunity to help train the cadets into becoming young adults and contributing to society as business leaders, educators, military service members, first responders and many other professions. I firmly believe that CAP makes a positive difference in a child’s development.
While our cadet program is important, it would not be fair to our adult members (referred to as “seniors”), who help carry out the missions of CAP, not to address their hard work as mandated by the U.S. Congress. They are pilots, machinists, plumbers, lawyers, teachers, retirees and many other things. Each of the senior members brings his or her life’s lessons and experiences to our program. While participating in squadron activities they also contribute to the state and nation by sharing in the many life-saving, emergency, and flight projects. The seniors all enjoy working in a field that interests them which may be related to their civilian or past military experiences or, if they choose, may be a new and interesting adventure for them.
I now have the honor to serve as the Commander of OCS. In this new role I will have an even greater hand in shaping the CAP program to be the best possible experience for our cadets.
CAP and Oakland Composite Squadron offer opportunities to all our members which are fun, exciting and help serve our community, state and nation. I invite you to consider visiting one of our meetings to interact with our members and to see what we do. You or your cadet-age child may very well get hooked! I hope you do.
